CONSTRUCTION PICTURES 1999
The History of Soliloquy's Way Cottage: In the fall of 1998, I decided to design a cottage as a challenge to myself. I wanted to see what I could do with a relatively small square footage area and yet not feel cramped or small. Challenges included: no hallways, using every inch of space in an active manor, playing with unusual roof lines, fitting a staircase in without wasting space, building on a steep slope, being a unique structure, considering the integrity of the mountain and the views, making the best use of materials & labor, being easy for me to maintain, and for the structure to operate efficiently. As important as the building itself, it had to have a special appeal to those individuals who were considering reserving Soliloquy's Way for their getaways, celebrations and holiday times. I wanted the end result to have a "wow" factor. While being s bit quaint-looking from the exterior, I wanted to surprise anyone walking in the front door. It needed to be practical to use, appeal to one's senses, feel comfortable, offer a sense of contentment and to hopefully, open one's mind to new ideas or concepts by offering them a different physical/mental space. It was important to me to offer people a sense of aloneness and privacy with being in the beauty of nature. Thus it's name: "Soliloquy's Way" meaning solitude, solo times or the way of self insights. Lastly, it had to prove itself to be an economic success from a rental aspect. Being governed by a very tight budget, I planned to be very active in the actual building process. It took nine months of continuous work to complete Soliloquy's Way. The majority of work was done by Richard Eden, a 28 year-old Englishman who is a precise and excellent craftsman--with me as the helper. Richard and I had been friends for several years at Lake Haven Marina, where I moored my old 1978 Yukon Delta houseboat --which I had renovated by myself. When I think back on what Richard and I achieved, it was an adventure. We built the walls on the floor and raised them by ourselves. We scampered around on the beams--even though we were far from the ground. We figured out the mathematics of the steps and drew them on a piece of left-over board. We worried about rain and strong winds but we kept working. We hammered a lot of nails! We kept focused on doing the best we could. Richard went on to design and build his own home near Smith Mountain Lake. For me personally, building Soliloquy's Way offered a huge demanding opportunity physically and emotionally. I was in better shape during that building process--stronger, muscular and slimmer. Emotionally, the building of this cottage helped push me past the grief of my Mother's death the year before. Some work was contracted out such as the post and beam floor joists as well as the roof supports by Larry Brown's crew, and the electrical work was done by Joe Gaddy's crew. Other people were hired to do the heat ducts, plumbing, roof shingles, siding, and some of the finish work. Soliloquy's Way was completed in late October of 1999. I was very pleased with the end result. The comments from guests continue to this day to be extremely favorable. Soliloquy's Way was built with love, excitement, lots patience, is a result of a daring idea, and is, in its own way, a self-expression of my creativity and me. Enjoy! Paula J. Tiara
