THE HISTORY OF THE ABODE: A Re-Purposing Project
Until August of 2010, this was a single family dwelling located near Bedford city. A very sweet couple owned the house with two small children and another on the way. They were selling this house to relocate in another town closer to his job and getting a larger home. After the family moved, renovation work began at that location with fixing major roof leaks, floor problems, putting in a new marble bathroom vanity, replacing the commode, and painting the entire interior of the house.
The house was then dragged up the mountain to its’ present location. It took eight hours, with a crew of four to move the house 16 miles…not easy to do!

After the move we continued working on it—now with more roof and floor damage from the move as well as plumbing damage. We put in a new kitchen sink and fixtures, light fixtures, door hardware, washer and dryer, refrigerator, shelving and carpeting. We painted the roof, made the decks, did landscaping and driveway work--which were accomplished between lots of snow and rain storms. Later on we replaced the furnace blower and did extensive cleaning of the entire duct system. Why do all this to a 1998 mobile home? It was to show what can be done to something that most people would have just turned their backs on. Mobile homes or Manufactured homes are considered “poor man housing”. I beg to differ. Take a look at the transformation! In the future we plan to continue improving this home's energy efficiency by adding a solar hot water, solar electric panels, LED lighting and a small windmill. The entire project, including buying the home, moving it, renovating it and completely furnishing it--including the hot tub was under $20,000. In this day and age what home can you buy for that kind of money and actually have an upscale home? Think about what it feels like to have a mortgage-free home. It is time that we in America take stock of what is readily available, waiting for a new life. Perhaps it is an unsightly old trailer, or abandoned office building or ransacked house. I challenge you to expand your vision, creativity, and ingenuity. Look around you at your environment in new ways. The Abode involved a lot of work and time. RATES: Minimum of TWO Nights required. $179. + 10% tax per night. Maximum of two people. RESTRICTIONS: Pets and children cannot be accommodated. Smoking within the house is not permitted. Must be at least 21 years old to rent (ID will be checked.) PAYMENTS Half of total dollar amount is due via a Visa or MC card at the time you make the reservation. The final balance is due 21 DAYS IN ADVANCE and will be charged to your card. Payments are returned with more than 21 days notice of cancellation. IF the cottage can be re-booked, the money is returned, paid via check with 20 or less days notice. If the cottage cannot be re-booked, the monies are forfeited. No refunds are given for for early departures. CHECK-IN: 4 PM or after EARLY CHECK-INS can be arranged for $25 per hour--if available, and needs to be booked in advance.
